While attending UNC, many of us were a part of a student movement to remove Silent Sam, a prominent confederate monument, from campus grounds. For decades upon decades, the University held a staunch and stubborn stance against removing Silent Sam until finally, student activists brought it down themselves in 2018. The Proud UNC Alumni called on Chancellor Folt to resist demands to reinstall Silent Sam and instead direct resources toward teaching the truth about the contribution of enslaved people to the University. We also initiated a letter-writing campaign to the Board of Trustees to amplify our alumni perspective on Silent Sam.
